A baby born in Stykkishólmur on May 21st was christened yesterday after Iceland’s famous trio—Chief of Police Víðir Reynisson, Chief Epidemiologist Þórolfur Guðnason, and Director of Health Alma Möller. He was named Víðir Þór Almarsson. The reason? The last months and weeks of Víðir’s mother’s pregnancy were coloured by the pandemic and the trio’s daily informational briefings, Vísir reports.
The boy’s father, Almar Þór Jónsson, said that the name originally came up as a joke after he and Víðir’s mother, Kristín Vigdís, spent the last weeks of pregnancy in quarantine.
“I jokingly said this to my mom at the coffee table,” he said, adding that they began to look at the name more seriously as time went by. Obvious resemblance between Almar Þór and Alma Möller’s first names made it possible to honour every member of the trio.
“There is also always a story behind the name,” he explained. He says the name has been well met by his family, even though it has earned some laughter. Almar said the name fits the child perfectly. “He is a real Víðir. Comforting and cool. Absolute charm.”
